Imagine trekking through a desert. You would experience the blistering sun, oppressive heat, thirst, and exhaustion…possibly a pounding headache.

The truth is we can all find ourselves in a “desert” season. One where you feel spiritually dry. One accompanied with worry and pain, leading to restlessness and exhaustion. However, even in the midst of a desert, God offers an oasis.

An oasis is the complete opposite of a desert and is an incredible paradox. How can a place with lush greenery, palm trees, and sources of water thrive in such an inhospitable environment? This is a metaphor for how God provides, even in the most unlikely of circumstances. So how does this become real in our own lives?

David wrote this psalm while in the desert. He was feeling the physical demands of being in a place not meant to sustain life, and he likened those to his soul's need for God. Our souls desperately need Him too.

Maybe you would consider yourself in a dry season, lacking the passion you once had. Maybe it’s in the form of a relational struggle, a concerning diagnosis, a wayward child, or intense financial pressure. Be encouraged that God sees it all and that He gives us His presence—a place to be refreshed even in challenging circumstances, an oasis in the middle of a desert.

¹³ Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, ¹⁴ but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:13-14 (NIV)

Jesus is referencing living water made available through Himself. His living water has the power to sustain you and bring new life where it seems impossible. This week, allow God to ignite a new passion in you to dig a deep relational well with Him that you can draw from day after day, trusting Him to sustain you even when you feel empty.
