We were created to know and love God. He wants us to know Him better, to continuously grow in our love and understanding of His goodness and character. This was Paul’s encouragement to the church in Ephesus. 

¹⁵ For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, ¹⁶ I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. ¹⁷ I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

You’ve probably noticed that words can change meaning over time, often through generational slang. Something that is sick may not be a bad thing, and if you have a young person in your life, you know that being cooked isn’t good.

The word passion has also evolved. Today, it’s something indicative of intense emotion and deep conviction, but historically, the word passion is rooted in a word meaning “to suffer.” That is why Christians have long referred to Jesus’ suffering and death as “the Passion of Christ.”

Jesus willingly suffered on the cross for us. He exhibited passion. He endured, taking on the sins of humanity so that we might be justified, made righteous, and enter into a relationship with a perfect God.

Revelation chapters 2 and 3 contain letters that Jesus sends to real, historical churches. The first is addressed to the church in Ephesus. He starts by affirming their hard work and perseverance through challenges. But He goes on to point out a serious concern: although they were doing many of the right things, their love for Him was no longer what it had once been.

We can all easily get to this place—forgetting to prioritize time getting to know God better. Today, as a way to realign our hearts toward Him, simply reflect on where you would be if God had not saved you.

What has He rescued you from? Do you recall the feeling of joy when you first realized God deeply loves you, despite anything you have done or will do? Think about how faithful He has been. As you position yourself this week to know Him better, don’t be surprised when passion follows.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
